Description:

The aim of this book is to focus on the coronary angioplasty. A coronary angioplasty is a therapeutic procedure to treat the stenotic (narrowed) coronary arteries of the heart found in coronary heart disease. These stenotic segments are due to the buildup of cholesterol-laden plaques that form due to atherosclerosis. A percutaneous coronary intervention is first performed. A PCI used with stable coronary artery disease reduces chest pain, but does not reduce the risk of death, myocardial infarction, or other major cardiovascular events when added to optimal medical therapy. This book consists of 28 chapters. It includes evolution of coronary angioplasty, percutaneous coronary intervention, periprocedural use of drugs for routine percutaneous coronary intervention, hardware for coronary angioplasty, left main stenting, coronary chronic total occlusion intervention technique, saphenous vein graft intervention and contrast-induced nephropathy. Advances in technology and pharmacotherapy, a better understanding of the pathophysiology of the atherosclerotic plaque and improved imaging intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), and optical coherence tomography (OCT), have enabled an exponential increase in numbers and an expansion in indications for percutaneous coronary interventions. Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) has overtaken coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) in most categories of coronary artery disease (CAD) requiring revascularization. This book is very useful to the beginners, are balanced with pathophysiology, and intervention in specific conditions, e.g. left main or during acute myocardial infarction (AMI).
